Driving in Cancun city specialities of Mexican driving system

Mexican road system

Please bear in mind when renting a car in Cancun, that the Mexican road system, although rather decent comparing to other Latin American countries, doesn't reach the US standards.
This means narrower lanes, occasional potholes, and rarely livestock on the road.
Toll roads in Mexico are generally better and worth the money they charge (you can pay both in US and Mexican currency).
Your Cancun car rental company will give you information about state of roads to your wished destination.
The gas stations around Cancun usually don't accept credit cards but will accept USD in cash.
One issue of particular importance is night driving. Many Cancun car rental agencies advise their clients not to drive during the night for variety of reasons, or at least drive very carefully.
It is often rather stressful for American tourists used to different road system and sometimes different cars to drive on Mexican roads in the darkness. Be careful.

Military Roadblocks - Stops in Mexico

Northbound vehicles are often checked for narcotics by Mexican military.
Be patient - these uniformed young men are here to protect the US from being flooded with South-American drugs.
Your Cancun car rental agency will probably explain the behavior code at roadblocks but the only rule really is that the more cooperative you are the faster you will pass.
Cold soft dring given to the soldiers will be appreciated (but it is not a necessary tip).
